We got you! Preparing our meals is super easy:
- Open pouch at near notch.
- Add 8-10 ounces of BOILING hot water (and we mean a full rolling boil) to the pouch.
- As you are zipping the bag, push out as much air as possible and zip tightly.
- Massage the bag gently and then leave on it's side for 10 minutes.
- Set your timer for 10 minutes. For real, wait the entire 10 minutes, you will be happy you did.
- Unzip and enjoy!
How does FOUNDATION Outdoors meals have so much protein?
How does FOUNDATION Outdoors meals have so much protein?
We live the outdoor lifestyle, so we know how important high protein and quality calories are to be your best whether you are blazing a trail, or hitting the biggest jumps in the world as a US Ski Team member.
We made the decision to prioritize spending the extra money on high quality meat to include in our meals.
Our protein is made from real meat - not nasty little slurry cubes, like the other guys. Our beef, pork and chicken are made from real muscle and we don't add fillers, binders or water to our meat, like the other guys.
We also use real cheddar, parmesan, pepperjack, and swiss cheeses, real eggs, and we only source the highest quality ingredients from around the United States.
You are never going to see fake meat, cheese water, dehydrated ingredients, or powders in our meals. We process all of our own ingredients in our USDA inspected plant, cook everything together and then we freeze dry it all together.
Our method of cooking meals all together instead of using random dried ingredients (like the other guys) makes our meals taste better, look better, reconstitute faster, and gives you a better bang for your buck when it comes to taste, flavor, protein and quality calories.
Freeze Drying
What is freeze drying?
What is freeze drying?
Freeze drying is a gentle process that preserves food with its original color, original size, and original nutritional values.
The process includes taking frozen food (and other frozen materials) and putting it in a sealed vacuum chamber, adding a small amount of heat which forces the frozen water molecules in the food to turn into a vapor, bypassing the thawing step.
The result is that only the water that was in the food has been removed, thus maintaining the cellular structure, nutritional value, and color. Then, all you have to do is reconstitute the product by replacing the lost water, and magically, the food is just was fresh and beautiful as it was before the freeze drying process!
What is the shelf life of freeze dried products?
What is the shelf life of freeze dried products?
We consider our products to have an indefinite shelf life. If freeze dried products are stored sealed and in a cool dry place, they will indeed, last forever.
If any moisture is added to the freeze dried product, it will reconstitute, stopping the shelf life.
There are companies that claim a 1 year shelf life, all the way to a 30 year shelf life. This is mainly because they have not validated their shelf life through a lab, so that is a "best guess", or they have validated their actual product over a 30 year time frame.
The other reason other companies claim a short shelf life is because they add dehydrated ingredients into the same pouch as the freeze dried ingredients. Dehydrated ingredients have a higher water activity, have lost more than 60% of it's nutritional value, and has lost its cellular structure. All of these factors lead to a shorter shelf life because over time, the water in dehydrated ingredients begins to reconstitute the incredibly dry freeze dried ingredients.
Why do FOUNDATION Outdoors pouches claim a 10 year shelf life?
Why do FOUNDATION Outdoors pouches claim a 10 year shelf life?
We consider our products to have an indefinite shelf life. If freeze dried products are stored sealed and in a cool dry place, they will indeed, last forever.
However, perception and standards in grocery and food retail do not account for indefinite shelf life. Claiming a 10 year shelf life has made grocery and food retailers happy, so we will comply.
Why don't FOUNDATION Outdoors pouches contain an oxygen absorber / dessicant pack?
Why don't FOUNDATION Outdoors pouches contain an oxygen absorber / dessicant pack?
Our freeze dryers are custom made by our team, and they have been optimized to pull nearly every particle of moisture out of our products.
Our manufacturing plant is located at high elevation in Salt Lake City, Utah. We have almost no humidity. When our freeze dried product is being packaged, we limit the amount of time that product is exposed to oxygen. We quickly eliminate all oxygen in the pouch, then seal the product in.
Oxygen absorbers are only active for a few minutes. Once all of the oxygen has been absorbed into the packet, it's job is done. Since our process does not introduce much oxygen into the incredibly dry product, there is no need for us to use absorbers.
Oxygen absorbers are an additional expense, additional weight, and additional waste that needs to be transported through your whole journey.
Our sustainability plan, as well as our validated shelf life for all of our pouches, excludes the need for wasteful and heavy oxygen absorbers.
How big are your freeze dryers?
How big are your freeze dryers?
We do not disclose the exact capacity of our freeze dryers. All of our industrial size freeze dryers are custom built in the United States by our own team of freeze drying experts, and manufacturing partners. We can freeze dry millions pounds of product per year.
Food Safety
The USDA - United States Department of Agriculture
The USDA - United States Department of Agriculture
To sell products that contain meat in the United States the product must be inspected by the USDA.
We are a USDA inspected plant and we have inspectors on site every single day. They even have their own office in our plant, and we hold regular meetings with them.
There are many companies that only sell online and they are not USDA inspected (this is legal to do), but we HIGHLY recommend that you only purchase high quality, and USDA inspected products. If the product contains real meat in it, but does not have a USDA mark of inspection on the front of the packaging, it is more than likely being made in someones garage or personal home kitchen - this is actually happening in this industry!
The FDA - Food and Drug Administration

We are also registered with the FDA to sell products that do not contain meat.
SQF - Safe Quality Food
SQF - Safe Quality Food
SQF is a third party global food auditing body that creates rules and guidelines that high quality food manufacturing plants must adhere to.
We have been rated as "Excellent" every year since 2017. We are audited yearly, and we have hit our goal of being a globally recognized as an "Excellent" manufacturing plant year after year. Excellent is the highest rating you can achieve, so you can be confident that our products are safe, high quality, and backed by the best oversight government and nongovernment auditing bodies in the world.
No Recalls
No Recalls
As mentioned previously, we are inspected by the USDA, are certified SQF, and are registered with the FDA.
We have had no voluntary or involuntary recalls in the entire time we have been in business, which has been more than 10 years.
We process all of our ingredients in house, every ingredient undergoes at least one lethality step, and we do more environmental and product pathogen and micros testing than any other USDA plant in the country.
You can be confident that you will be eating a safe and premium quality product when you are eating a FOUNDATION Outdoors meal.
Prop 65 Compliance
Prop 65 Compliance
Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is a California law that requires businesses to provide warnings to Californians about significant exposures to chemicals that can cause cancer or reproductive toxicity. It also prohibits businesses from knowingly discharging certain listed chemicals into sources of drinking water.
While we are based out of Utah and not under the jurisdiction of California laws, products that we ship there are subject to Prop 65 states laws.
In order to be compliant with Prop 65 in California, we have created and follow our Prop 65 Mitigation Plan. We formulate our recipes and source ingredients that are 100% Prop 65 compliant. In addition to sourcing products that do not contain heavy metals and chemicals, we also do in-house product and surface testing to ensure that every product that leaves our plant is compliant with all California Prop 65 law.
We have a dedicated legal team that ensures that our packaging, labeling, formulations and products are compliant with Prop 65. For any California attorney that is interested in challenging our products for compliance, we are ready to provide detailed testing and compliance records for you to review.
